I had a conversation with a fellow small business owner recently that really hit home.
We were talking about what small business owners actually need when it comes to external support. What they genuinely care about. What keeps them up at night.
And honestly? It reminded me why I love what I do.
As HR professionals, we can get really excited about the latest programmes, initiatives, new ways of working. And that’s great - for us.
But here’s the reality I’ve learned in almost 15 years working with small businesses, what business owners need isn’t always the sexy stuff we get excited about in HR circles.
It’s the practical things. Making sure people have contracts. Dealing with someone who’s underperforming. Helping exit an employee when - let’s be honest - they haven’t followed a textbook process because they’re running a business, not an HR department.
This is what I love about my work. It’s not about delivering what looks good on paper or ticks boxes. It’s about supporting business owners to reach solutions that actually serve their business.
Small business owners don’t need more initiatives. They need someone who understands what really matters to them. Someone who gets their reality.
That’s what I’ve been doing for almost 15 years, and that’s what I’ll keep doing.
